Small-item storage is at a premium in the cargo area and the back seat, but front-seat occupants won't notice the pinch thanks to large door pockets and a large glovebox. We managed to fit 19 of our carry-on suitcases with the rear seats folded. Despite its small size, the Kicks impressed us with its results in our cargo tests, matching and beating some larger rivals. Splashes of color throughout the cabin do a nice job of breaking up the monotony of what would otherwise be an all-black interior. An adult-sized rear seat means it can haul people and cargo without the cramped feeling one might experience in rivals such as the C-HR. Interior styling is less trendy than the exterior design of the Kicks, but it is well-built, looks grown-up, and has a user-friendly interior.

Despite its stellar result in our test, the tiny 10.8-gallon fuel tank abbreviates its cruising range. Its 37-mpg result tied with the Toyota C-HR. The Kicks has earned excellent EPA fuel-economy ratings in our 75-mph real-world highway fuel-economy test, it sipped fuel more like an economy car than an SUV.

2021 Nissan Kicks Arrives with More Standard Tech.

The steering is direct and accurate, but there's very little feedback that comes up from the road to the driver's hands. The suspension is tuned more for comfort, and it provided a well-cushioned ride even over the pitted and crumbling roads around our offices in Ann Arbor. The Kicks is nimble and more fun to throw around than some larger SUVs, but it's not exactly a thrill ride on a twisty road. Around town it feels plenty perky so long as you're willing to rev the engine. However, the test results we recorded are only half the story. If the leisurely 9.7-second jog from zero to 60 mph makes the Kicks seem slow, that's because it is. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) handles shifting duties and drives the front wheels all-wheel drive is not offered. Engine, Transmission, and PerformanceĮvery 2021 Kicks model is powered by a 122-hp four-cylinder engine that provides adequate but far from thrilling acceleration. All Kicks models are front-wheel drive all-wheel drive is not an option. We'd spring for the mid-range SV it adds desirable items such as the new 8.0-inch infotainment display, adaptive cruise control, 17-inch wheels, and a center-console armrest. The Kicks is well-equipped even at the base S trim level, which includes a host of standard driver-assistance features. Adaptive cruise control is now available as is an electronic parking brake with an auto brake-hold feature. The center console has been redesigned, as have the dashboard air vents, the front-seat armrest, and the door-trim panels, which now feature silver-painted accents. A Wi-Fi hotspot is now available as an option on the top spec SR trim.

Inside, SV and SR models now come with a new 8.0-inch infotainment system, and all Kicks trims now feature Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Nissan has also expanded the availability of the contrasting black roof option to cars painted in Scarlet Ember Tintcoat, Boulder Gray Pearl, and Electric Blue Metallic. Nissan's smallest crossover receives a styling update for 2021 which includes a larger grille, streamlined headlamps and taillamps, redesigned front and rear bumpers, and a new 17-inch aluminum wheel design.

One thing that's missing that may raise the eyebrows of SUV buyers is all-wheel drive, but this SUV's urban focus puts more emphasis on fuel efficiency than off-road capability. Nissan also provides plenty of opportunity for personalization via a bold color palette and many options and accessories. Standard equipment is plentiful and includes driver-assistance features and popular infotainment tech such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Its powertrain leaves us wanting, especially when traveling at highway speeds, but as a city-focused commuter the Kicks is, um, a kick. With a bold exterior look and a surprisingly spacious cabin, the 2021 Nissan Kicks is a stylish small SUV with a practical side.
